A day of protest has been called for the Sagada 11, young anarchists falsely accused of a Maoist guerilla attack and tortured in The Philippines - Phone, fax, email, write on Friday, 17th November. Also more demonstrations at embassies etc are encouraged, please copy and distribute the leaflet below, and last but not least please write to the prisoners directly.

11 YOUNG ANARCHISTS FALSELY ACCUSED OF A MAOIST GUERILLA ATTACK AND TORTURED IN THE PHILIPPINES

On February 14th this year, a group of anarcho-punks from across the Philippines aged 15-25 were on a trip to Sagada, a well known hiking spot, to go walking. Police stopped the vehicle they were hitchhiking with and brutally arrested them without a warrant. Later, they were told of an attack by Maoist guerillas on a military outpost a few days before. When they denied involvement, they were subjected to further torture including suffocation, electrocution, simulated executions and drowning. The two youngest had to be released, but the 9 others have been charged with arson and murder.

The youths were all active in ecological campaigns and groups such as Food not Bombs, but there is no evidence of any connection with any Maoist organisations, or guerilla groups, or any evidence for the crime. Their arrest was illegal. They are being held under terrible conditions without even basic necessities or enough food in overcrowded cells.

International solidarity could make a huge difference to this case. There has already been a demonstration at the Filipino embassy in London; we are now calling for a day of protest on Friday 17th November, with phone calls, letters, faxes, and emails both to the prison in which they are being held and to the Filipino embassy in London to pressure for their release. You can say you are phoning/writing about the Sagada 11, mention their names, and that you would like to enquire about their welfare/you think the arrests were illegal/demand their immediate release, etc. Please remember that they are being accused of being part of Maoist/terrorist actions so be careful not to associate them with anything overtly political.

a reaction to unexpected anarchist moments:
anarchists' moments is like instant noodles...
one wonders if boiled water mixed with a few strands of egg noodles mixed with MSG is enough to provide nourishment for a starving soul..?
what differentiates food not bombs' feeding activities from the charitywork done by the church? both are grassroots, both are voluntary work,both are provide "momentarily" relief from hunger (pun intented), both are anti-war in principle, both does not really addresses the systemic roots of hunger.
ergo: could food not bombs be a front for the theo-insipired response to guilt of the privilege?yes comrade, it does taste like instant noodles... how's that for an anarchist moment? (beware of the dark, because in the shadows lurk the anarchist moment)

1. both are grassroots -
*** the church is part of the mechanism of state to cripple people's autonomy,
if not slave machine of it's own...their effect is grassroots but they are not.(there's an old saying god = oil,gold & drugs)

... we still hope to earn that title...grassroots, sounds so nice!

2. both are voluntary work -
*** the church is not. again, they're a strict(disciplined), calculated system of domination..that makes everyone feel bad abt themselves because they have nothing to eat...they have bureaucracy & feeding is a part of their program...

... we are all volunteers.

3. both are provide "momentarily" relief from hunger -
*** if we werent living in an "imperfect world", this statement isn't true.
but we are. all our efforts, our lives are but momentary...and we are all hungry, if not for food... but for more meaning in our lives...everyday for the rest of our lives.

4. both are anti-war in principle -
*** again, the church is not anti-war in principle. in case you've forgotten... Bush won the presidency coz the Christian Right won. remember, the Burning Times, where thousands of pagans/witches/non-believers were burned to death coz they didn't believe in their God? and lately here...the Tarlac Massacre where Cory Aquino, the supposedly Christian loving symbol owns the place and let it happen and is still happening right now.

... The name Food Not Bombs states our most fundamental principle: society needs to
promote life, not death. the name Food Not Bombs in itself is a statement of this principle and the group's origin clearly states that. Nothing could be more obvious.

5. both does not really addresses the systemic roots of hunger -
*** if the church would do that, they've be eaten alive!

... FOod Not Bombs have clearly identified Global Capitalism, the State & it's army of police/military & The Apathy of Our Everyday Lives as culprits (or enemy) that we must confront, challenge & Change if we are to call ourselves human.

we don't know who you've encountered, but the people we've worked/shared activities(feeding)with, are people who doesn't really have much to offer...these are the people who wait at bodhi for discounted prices, scabs food at foodcourt & steals food anywhere, they or we rent in squatters/communities where it's filthy, we've to work everyday to eat & live...i guess you must have encountered a different group...
theo-inspired?...most of us are vocal atheists & pagans...we plot burning christian churches every once in a while...if we're not listening to death/grind/crust/metal/hXc/punk music, we behead statues of saints*

* prutas/fruits ( eto, destroy to! masustansya, madaling dalhin, nagkalat
lang sa kusina nyo to! marami din sa palengke nito! hehehe)

* at lahat ng mga bagay na di natin maisip kung me silbi o wala sa atin, pwede magamit ng mga kaibigan nating kung tawagin ay "homeless".

sabi nga nila "it only takes commitment to share"

FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Spies on 'Food Not Bombs'

As Food Not Bombs Prepares to Celebrate Its 25th Anniversary, the ACLU Releases Documents Confirming the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force Has Targeted Food Not Bombs for Surveillance and Harassment "Since when did feeding the homeless become a terrorist activity? When the FBI and local law enforcement target groups like Food Not Bombs under the guise of fighting terrorism, many Americans who oppose government policies will be discouraged from speaking out and exercising their rights." -- ACLU Legal Director Ann Beeson

(Food Not Bombs, May 24, 2005) Last week, the ACLU reported they received documents that reveal the FBI "is targeting peaceful political activists for harassment and building files on constitutionally-protected political activities and associations that have nothing to do with terrorism or other criminal activity." Apparently, they are particularly interested in Food Not Bombs, a non-violent activist group that opposes the government's prioritization of war and military programs over social programs.

This year, Food Not Bombs is celebrating its 25th anniversary of sharing vegetarian food and organizing for peace. This global movement was started by seven anti-nuclear activists after the May 24, 1980 occupation attempt to stop the construction of the Seabrook Nuclear Power Station 20 miles north of Boston. There is growing evidence that U.S. Intelligence agencies, using the cover of fighting terrorism, have been spying on non-violent legal political movements like Food Not Bombs because of their ability to inspire opposition to war and poverty.

During the past 25 years, Food Not Bombs has grown to hundreds of autonomous chapters all sharing free vegetarian food with hungry people and protesting war and poverty. The movement is active in the Americas, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Australia. In the past few years, Food Not Bombs groups have been working to end to the occupations of Iraq, Afghanistan and Palestine.

They also support actions against the globalization of the economy, restrictions to the movements of people and the destruction of the earth. Tel Aviv Food Not Bombs is supporting efforts to open the wall between Israel and Palestine. Food Not Bombs groups in Slovakia helped start animal rescue shelters in 24 communities. The Copenhagen chapter won the Danish Peace Award. Food Not Bombs sets up kitchens at many anti-globalization protests and its UnFree Trade Tour of 60 cities in North America (1997) inspired the "Battle of Seattle" in November 1999.

Food Not Bombs is an all-volunteer movement dedicated to non-violent direct action. Food Not Bombs has no formal leaders and strives to include everyone in its decision making process. Each group recovers food that would otherwise be thrown out and makes fresh hot vegetarian meals that are served in city parks or on street corners to anyone without restriction. The groups also serve free vegetarian meals at protests and other events. Thousands of people have experienced the sense of empowerment that comes from participating in this self-directed project (feeding people) that really makes a difference.

Surveillance and harassment of Food Not Bombs in an effort to silence the movement's message has occurred for most of its 25 years. In San Francisco, the volunteers with the local chapter haves been arrested over 1,000 times (with only a handful ever receiving their day in court). One volunteer even faced life in prison on trumped-up charges. As a result, Amnesty International declared it would adopt any Food Not Bombs volunteers that are imprisoned as "Prisoners of Conscience" and will work for their unconditional release. The Food Not Bombs website states that the movement "works in coalition with groups like Earth First!, The Leonard Peltier Defense Committee, Anarchist Black Cross, the IWW, Homes Not Jails, Anti Racist Action, In Defense of Animals, the Free Radio Movement and other organizations on the cutting edge of positive social change and resistance to the new global austerity program." One FBI memo claims they are investigating Food Not Bombs because of its connection to the Anarchist Black Cross, a prisoner's rights group. Someone should inform the FBI the right to association in the United States is still protected by the Constitution.

In Tucson, Arizona, the Food Not Bombs collective publishes a website www.foodnotbombs.net. Another hosts FNB News where you can learn more about the Food Not Bombs community. Food Not Bombs Publishing in Takoma Park, Maryland publishes books like On Conflict and Consensus, which has been an important guide for group democracy. They urge everyone to take direct action towards creating a world free from domination, coercion and violence. They believe food is a right, not a privilege. Please visit these links to learn more.

Food Not Bombs Manila's planning is up for a less demanding/non-pressured workshop/discussion regarding collectives, consensus, local fnb process, etc.

Food Not Bombs Manila needs your help & COMMITMENT to make this happen! We want to know what skills we can share, what changes would we all like to see, ideas to guide and motivate us all, etc. We're open to hearing from all of you and the more experienced folks....

We still have not discussed these activities vital to our goals:

* laws / lawyer
* food transportation
* obtaining large-scale cooking equipment
* dynamic / nomadic / mobile vegetarian kitchen

we'll be cooking for more or less 200 people including children. pls bring drums/percussions or any musical instruments for music...it would also be nice if you can bring prints of FNB logos with signs saying something like " free food for everyone", "libreng pagkain para sa lahat", " free food", "libreng pagkain", atbp.
